Get Out of Jail (NICU) Card

So, I finally remembered to ask my parents if the doctors had indicated what would spring Lincoln from the NICU and send him home. I’m certainly not in any hurry to get him out of the hospital until he is ready (healthwise), but I just wanted to know what goal we were shooting for. Apparently, coupled with his weight, he has to be able to nurse and/or take a bottle and breathe and swallow while doing so. Alright…now we have a mission…where do we stand?

Well…our little overachiever as of yesterday weighed 3lbs and 1/2 ounce and continues to gain at least 20 grams (0.705 ounces) every day. They allowed Janet to try nursing him Thursday and Friday, but the first two tries resulted in a very unhappy Lincoln. However, last night he nursed for 15 minutes! This may be more information than you wanted, but I’m trying to use the more discreet terms for such things where possible. I don’t know how often they will have Janet nurse him as opposed to using the feeding tube (that’s the one through the nose), and obviously, if the feeding tube is removed, but he is still in the NICU for his weight, they will have to feed him with a bottle when Janet is not there (at night or early in the morning).  However, he’s certainly making strides in the right direction towards getting out of the NICU and getting to go home with Mommy and Daddy.
